Dr. Jim Pottebaum was raised on a family farm near Carroll, Iowa. He attended Iowa State University studying Animal Science and graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine in 1988. He and his wife Cindy were married at ISU and moved to Winterset after graduation to work at the Winterset Veterinary Center. In January 1989 he became a partner, and is now sole owner of the Winterset Veterinary Center. Dr. Jim enjoys mixed animal practice because everyday provides a variety of activities. Cow-calf, swine, sheep, and equine work, as well as, pets and exotics are seen at the clinic. When he is not at work, Dr. Jim is involved in many church and civic organizations and volunteer projects. Dr. Jim and Cindy have 3 grown children Rebecca, Kate, and Sam that they follow around the world.
Dr. Lonna Nielsen got her start on a farrow to finish hog farm in north central Iowa. At age 10 she first told her parents she wanted to be a veterinarian. She spent many hours doctoring kittens, pigs, and horses growing up. She attended Waldorf College where she met her husband, Dan Nielsen. They were married in 1984 prior to Lonna attending Veterinary School at Iowa State University. In 1988, she received her DVM and they moved to St. Cloud, MN. During the 12 years they were in that area, she worked for 3 years with small animal practitioners and then opened her own practice, Animal Care Clinic of St. Cloud. In 1995, she merged her business with VetSmart in Waite Park, MN (now known as Banfield Pet Hospital) and practiced for a period of time within the walls of PetsMart. A few years later she decided to stay home with her children and they moved back to Iowa. Dan and Lonna have 4 children Jaclyn, JD, Jenna, and JoAnn. In 2004, they moved to the Winterset area. Dr. Lonna has been at Winterset Veterinary Center since August 2007. She enjoys working with the small animals and their owners. In her spare time she sits on bleachers watching her children, attends St. Paul Lutheran Church, and loves to ride horses when she gets a chance. Her husband Dan is the President and Financial Advisor for American State Bank in Winterset.
